What is this episode about

Summer is winding down in Dalby and Cropton Forests as the series returns. The air has cleared up after the record-breaking heat wave. However, heat and drought in August are causing a false Autumn to occur, with leaves turning orange and berries ripening early.

This is the time of year when kingfishers, one of the most spectacular birds in all of Britain, are most likely to be spotted at the beaver pond. They are a captivating sight, perched on an outlying branch of one of the beaver dams and adorned in bright turquoise and orange. Then in an instant they are plunging into the water, and moments later they are pulling out fish.

The search continues for the pine marten, a much more elusive animal deep in the woods. Once widespread in North Yorkshire, they are now critically endangered in England due to hunting and forest loss. Only in recent years have encouraging signs emerged that they may once again be roaming our forests. They are one of Dalby’s most endangered species, so much so that a team has set up motion-activated cameras in an effort to catch a glimpse of them. It’s been months since a pine marten was photographed; will we find any signs of their continued presence in the woods?

In Cropton, we come across another group on the prowl for bats. They suspect that the bat population has grown since the beavers arrived, but they need hard data to back up this theory. Thus, they have set out to count the number of bat passes in the area using specialised equipment.
