Serengeti “Dominion” (BBC One Sunday 12 February 2023)
Serengeti airs a new episode tonight Sunday 12 February 2023 on BBC One.
“Dominion” Families in the Serengeti are battling for limited housing options. Bakari’s kopje has been taken over by Kali and her pride. They are outnumbered, and there appears to be no way for him and his group to escape. However, as the lions go to sleep, he knows this is his chance.
Mafuta, the young hippo, is also in peril at the river. Mafuta’s mother desperately tries to stop the crocodiles from desecrating the body of the giant hippo bull he killed in defence of his family. Mafuta gets swept away in the confusion that ensues. But by the time she figures it out, hundreds of wildebeest have already crossed the river, blocking her way to her son.
Magamba the crocodile, further up the river, has her hands full protecting her recently hatched young. Hungry birds stalking the reeds have an easy time picking off her hatchlings, but Magamba quickly demonstrates her might. However, she cannot provide for her offspring indefinitely and must eventually abandon them.
Amidst their hunt for a new home, Bakari leads his group directly into the path of Duma and the cheetah alliance. Duma is eager to make amends after the other males had to rescue him from his failed wildebeest hunt. So, he’s going to go up against Bakari.
The future of Mafuta is similarly unclear. Without his father’s watchful eye, the pod is vulnerable to an invading hippo that is intent on taking over. Magamba, half-starved from the river crossings, struggles to get food. She’s surrounded by so many wildebeest that she feels like she’s being trampled underfoot forever. She has tried many times without success, but she has one more shot at it, and she is fatigued and hungry as ever.
