What is this episode about
The British Empire reached a watershed point in the 1830s when slavery was outlawed. With their momentum gained, the abolitionists turned their attention to the suffering of Indigenous communities. Their goal was to have First Nations people negotiate for land rights and to have a different approach to laying the groundwork for South Australia. However, due to settler interests taking precedence, no such agreements or treaties were made on the ground, and London was located on the opposite side of the planet.
Part three of this written series follows filmmaker Rachel Perkins—her family tree includes European and Indigenous Australian ancestry—as the frontier conflict spreads across the continent from the reign of the British to that of the federated Commonwealth and state parliaments.
To aid in the clearance of land for settlers, the newly formed government of Queensland created its own Native Police. Adapted to follow the path of the frontier, they advanced northward over time. It is believed that 72,000 Indigenous people were killed by the Native Police during its 50 years of existence. The pattern of settlements is repeated as one moves further north and west. During what the First Nations call the “killing times,” when large pastoral stations are established across Indigenous lands, a strategy to “quieten the blacks” is put into motion.
