What is this episode about

Arriving with a newly acquired family heirloom are Vladimir, his wife Helen, and their daughter Lili. To get the magnificent wooden wall clock, they embarked on an incredible road trip across Europe to Serbia. The clock was purchased by Vlad’s great-great-grandfather in the early 1900s, and his family has owned it for five generations.

Rich farmers were Vlad’s ancestors’ way of life in what was then Yugoslavia. His family lost their wealth and land when the country turned communist at the end of World War II. They endured years of extreme adversity, and this clock—along with its maintenance—quickly came to represent their tenacity and commitment to family values. Vlad considers it an honour to be the keeper of the clock and is very proud of his background.

To make the 4,000-mile trip back to the UK, it was painstakingly disassembled and boxed. However, when Vlad lifted it out of the car in his driveway, the box shattered and the carved wooden casing scattered to the ground. Horologist Steve Fletcher steps in to save the day, giving the mechanism the much-needed life-giving kiss, while master carpenter Will Kirk handles the shattered casing.

Jayesh Vaghela, the master hatter, accepts a policeman’s helmet that belonged to an inspector who was loved by everyone he encountered but died tragically young, leaving behind a wife and six sons. Richard and Peter, the family’s sons, had kept it secure for years until the family dog had an unfortunate incident and turned it into a meal! The front peak is distorted and has had a large portion chewed away. They fervently hope to have it restored for display in order to honour their father’s memory.

Claire, accompanied by a little stained-glass angel that her late mother Margaret made especially for her, is the last person to enter the barn. One of Claire’s most cherished possessions is this angel, which is one of Margaret’s many new talents and interests. For years, it watched over her from her window until a breeze blew it off and broke it. Claire has a specific request about how she would like it to be put back together and is in dire need of expert Matt Nickel’s assistance.
