There have been a number of strange occurrences in oceans all over the world, including whales sinking boats, deep-sea crabs attacking beaches, and mussels preventing container ships from moving. Ice worms that were previously unknown are responsible for destabilising the slopes of continental shelves in the ocean, which in turn causes tsunamis. A potentially lethal pathogen is moving inland from the coasts via the water supply. Every day, the number of people around the world who are in imminent danger of dying keeps rising. In the frantic search for the causes of the unexplained phenomenon, a small group of scientists from all over the world come together, and something that was previously unthinkable becomes a certainty for the first time. The ocean is home to a species that has never been identified before, and its intelligence is currently at war with humans. However, very few people have faith in the researchers. As a result, the group decides to undertake a mission that puts their lives in danger. They follow the traces with their research ship until they reach the ice-covered waters of the Arctic Ocean.
