What’s Happening On Dr. Phil Today Friday September 30, 2022, on CBS
Dr. Phil Today Friday September 30, 2022, on CBS; According to many, cultural appropriation refers to individuals with a privileged position taking cultural identity markers from members of a minority community without their consent or acknowledgment. Language, art, music, literature, clothing, food, beauty standards and traditions, as well as social norms, customs, and values, can all fall under this category. Does that imply that Caucasians are never allowed to own Chinese restaurants? Are braids or locks acceptable on Latinos?
Should kids never dress up for Halloween as someone from a different culture, ethnicity, or race? Is there ever a time when admiration becomes appropriation, and is the case against appropriation valid? Does the anti-appropriation movement veer into racism? Meet three young women: one who claims to have received death threats for donning a dress from a different culture; another who claims to have come under fire for dressing up as a Japanese anime character; and a third who believes that people should stop appropriating foods from other cultures and claiming them as their own. Dr. Phil is joined in a heated discussion by Amala Ekpunobi, a PragerU personality and host of the podcast Unapologetic LIVE, Brittany Collins, an influencer and business owner, and Dr. Neal Lester, a foundation professor of English at Arizona State University.
Airdate: Friday September 30, 2022 at 3.00pm on CBS.
