Guilt | Interview with Rochelle Neil (Yvonne)

Guilt | Interview with Rochelle Neil (Yvonne)

Tell us about Yvonne’s character.

Yvonne is a smart, streetwise divorcee and police detective. She is also a recovering alcoholic who’s forced to make some difficult choices when her work and personal life become one and the same.

We meet Yvonne at AA. What is the story that lead her to AA?

Yvonne initially moved to Edinburgh to be with her now ex-husband, but with the end of her marriage she finds her drinking spiralling out of control, as she tries to cope with her grief and loneliness. This has also put her remaining life line, her career, in jeopardy. So we meet her as a woman with many secrets, trying her best to make amends.

Yvonne and Kenny hit it off from the beginning. Is their relationship genuine? Could there be a future with those two?

I do think Yvonne and Kenny have a genuine chemistry when they first meet. The hopeless romantic in me would love to see them sail off into the sunset but they haven’t had the best foundation. I wonder if Kenny will ever truly trust her again.

Are you similar to Yvonne in any way?

In many ways I’d say yes. We’re both super passionate about what we do. Also she’s a woman who is deeply flawed but trying her best which I found really relatable.

What was it that appealed to you about this character?

I was intrigued to explore how a person comes back from their rock bottom. The juggling act between heart and head. Also Neil’s writing is wonderful!

What was it like working with such a great cast?

The cast and crew on Guilt were awesome to work with. It was a super supportive, fun set. Also shooting in Glasgow and Edinburgh over Christmas, even during lockdown, was a treat.

Do you think we’ll see Yvonne again in the future, and where do you think the character could go in a third series?

I hope so. Yvonne has so far been a bit of a lone wolf. I’d be interested to see why she didn’t just head back to London after her divorce. Maybe she’s running from more than we think.
