Cecilia Vega Brings Her Award-Winning Journalism to “60 Minutes”
Cecilia Vega, winner of an Emmy, has been hired as a correspondent for 60 MINUTES, CBS News’ flagship newscast, it was revealed today by the show’s executive producer, Bill Owens. The spring will see Vega reporting from the nation’s capital for 60 MINUTES.
“Cecilia Vega is a sensational reporter and storyteller. I have admired her work for a long, long time and couldn’t be more excited to welcome her to 60 MINUTES. Her new colleagues couldn’t agree more,” said Owens.
“This is a dream come true. I am beyond honored to join the ranks of this legendary show and to work alongside the best reporters in journalism,” said Vega.
Vega was one of the most prominent political reporters in the country as ABC News’ chief White House correspondent. She now joins the esteemed team of journalists at 60 MINUTES. She has anchored several shows, including “Good Morning America” and “World News Tonight” on Saturdays, and covered every major event of the last decade, including the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections, the COVID-19 pandemic, the Fukushima nuclear power plant disaster, and the papal conclave that elected Pope Francis. She has toured the world to report on issues of national and international relevance, and she has done hundreds of high-profile interviews with political newsmakers, foreign leaders, and celebrities.
Vega has worked on both political sides and in every branch of government. At times, especially during the height of the COVID-19 outbreak in the United States, her interviews with the president and other administration officials made headlines. Vega also covered Trump’s impeachment proceedings, the termination of FBI director James Comey, the Mueller report, and the appointment of three justices to the Supreme Court. In 2021, she gave readers an emotional insight at the perilous journeys migrants take to enter the United States from the U.S.-Mexico border through her reportage. Vega was able to question President Biden during his first news conference on whether or not the administration’s confusing messaging on immigration was to blame for the increase in border crossings.
During her time at ABC, Vega also covered the 2016 presidential campaign for Hillary Clinton, the re-election of President Barack Obama, and the inaugurations of both Donald Trump and Joe Biden. In 2011, Vega became a journalist for ABC News located in Los Angeles. Previously, she worked as a reporter for San Francisco’s KGO-TV on ABC, where she was honored as a member of the station’s Emmy-winning midday news team. She first entered the media as a print journalist for the San Francisco Chronicle.
Cecilia Vega was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, but she now makes her home in the nation’s capital with her husband.
