Foreign Correspondent: The Second Amazon (ABC TV Thursday 9 March 2023)
One of the most extraordinary areas on Earth, which some environmentalists have dubbed the “second Amazon,” may be found on Australia’s northern edge.
Papua New Guinea’s Sepik River Basin is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a place where ancient cultures still exist. It’s a hidden spot that very few people ever get to see. Natalie Whiting, PNG correspondent, has been hearing rumours for some time about what is happening in the remote villages upriver, including talk of a logging land grab, police violence, and even killings. As seen on this week’s episode of Foreign Correspondent, she travels up the Sepik River to get a first-hand look at the unfolding events.
A community in the Upper Sepik jungle is at odds. Several people are optimistic about the economy because of logging and a prospective large-scale mine location. Others, however, worry that environmental destruction would occur as a result of the area being developed by foreign firms. Papua New Guinea is the leading supplier of tropical round logs, however some landowners in the region of Sepik believe that logging is taking place without official permits and that those who resist it face repercussions. Many of the villagers are furious and eager to do whatever it takes to defend some of the few remaining unspoiled rainforests and waterways on Earth, despite a deep-seated distrust of multinational corporations and the promises they make.
Airdate: Thursday 9 March at 8.00pm on ABC TV and ABC iview.
