In the upcoming episode of Great Coastal Railway Journeys, airing on BBC Two on Thursday April 25, Michael Portillo travels along the Channel coastline and ventures into the Thames estuary via Calais. As he explores the Isle of Thanet, a flat and temperate landscape, he uncovers its rich agricultural heritage and the bounty it offers.
Starting from Herne Bay, Portillo makes his way towards the Reculver Towers, majestic remnants of a Saxon church that date back to the seventh century. These towers stand as a testament to the area’s rich historical fabric. Continuing his exploration, Portillo ventures into Blean Woods, one of the largest expanses of ancient woodland in Britain, offering a serene escape from the modern world.
The journey then leads Portillo to the charming fishing port of Whitstable, renowned for its delicious oysters. Over time, Whitstable has evolved into a culinary destination, attracting food enthusiasts from near and far. Here, Portillo immerses himself in the local cuisine and discovers the town’s vibrant food culture.
Great Coastal Railway Journeys airs on BBC Two at 6:30 pm on Thursday, 25 April 2024.
