Mean Girl Murders explores the complex dynamics between female friends, shedding light on the darker side of these relationships and the shocking acts of violence that can emerge. In the episode “Straight A Killer,” airing on Investigation Discovery on April 22, the focus shifts to a tragic case involving two straight-A students, Danyna Gibson and Tanaya Lewis, whose academic rivalry took a deadly turn.
Gibson and Lewis were two ambitious students at Fitzgerald High School in Warren, Michigan. The two teens, both involved in numerous extracurricular activities, were initially friends but found themselves entangled in a dispute over a boy, leading to a fatal encounter.
On September 12, 2018, Lewis, then 17, brought a kitchen knife to school and fatally stabbed Gibson, 16, in a classroom. The attack occurred in front of at least 20 witnesses, including a teacher, and was fueled by jealousy and rivalry. Lewis was charged with first-degree premeditated murder and ultimately sentenced to 27 to 60 years in prison.
Mean Girl Murders has previously covered cases such as the murder of Stacy DeGrandchamp, a popular volleyball player, and the disappearance of Tiffany Boyer, a young woman involved in an edgy party scene in Albuquerque. Each episode looks into the complex dynamics of female friendships and the devastating consequences when these relationships turn toxic.
