The first episode of The Jinx: Part 2 picks up where the previous season left off, taking us deep into the aftermath of Robert Durst’s arrest and the impact of the documentary series on the investigations and lives of those involved.
The episode begins by recounting the events leading up to Durst’s arrest, including his infamous hot mic confession, “Killed them all, of course,” which took place during the finale of the first season in 2015. This confession led to his arrest by the FBI for the murder of his friend, Susan Berman, 15 years earlier.
One notable moment in the episode involves a juror from Durst’s first murder trial, Chris Lovell, who not only acquitted Durst but also befriended him. It is revealed that their friendship continued for years, with Lovell’s wife being hired by Durst as an assistant. Security footage shows that the Lovells helped clear Durst’s apartment of evidence as he fled to New Orleans, where he was eventually arrested.
Another compelling scene depicts the real-time reaction of Kathleen McCormack’s family as they watch Durst’s confession during a viewing party hosted by director Andrew Jarecki. McCormack, Durst’s murdered first wife, has never been found, and her family’s silence and subsequent relief upon hearing Durst’s confession is a powerful moment.
The episode also includes interrogation recordings from New Orleans, where Durst was arrested, and prison calls made by Durst. It is revealed that Durst considered fleeing to Cuba and even had a realistic latex mask to disguise himself. However, he ultimately didn’t believe he would be arrested.
The Jinx: Part 2 continues to uncover hidden material and include interviews with witnesses who have come forward since the first season, shedding new light on the case and providing a sense of closure for the affected families.
The Jinx Part 2 Episode 1 aired on HBO on Sunday April 21, 2024.
