RuPaul Crowns Nymphia Winds as America’s Next Drag Superstar
Nymphia Winds has been crowned the winner of season 16 of RuPaul’s Drag Race. The Taiwanese designer and drag artist clinched the title of America’s Next Drag Superstar during the finale on Friday April 19, marking a significant milestone as the first Taiwanese and East Asian winner in the show’s history.
Winds, also known as Leo Tsao, showcased their talent throughout the season, frequently paying homage to their Taiwanese heritage. They wowed the judges with their original designs and affinity for the colour yellow, often incorporating Taiwanese opera, Japanese Butoh dance, and traditional Chinese elements into their performances.
Speaking to Good Morning America after their win, Winds emphasised the importance of representing their country: “It’s very important for me to represent my country… I love Taiwan, and to be able to showcase that on ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ means so much to me.”
The final lip-sync battle saw Winds face off against Sapphira Cristál, with Winds making a statement in a coat adorned with a bubble tea pattern, a playful nod to their East Asian heritage. As the coat came off, a cascade of balloons symbolising boba pearls paid homage to their cultural roots.
Nymphia Winds’ victory has sparked celebrations in their home country of Taiwan, where they have become a symbol of pride and a cultural ambassador for the country’s vibrant LGBTQ+ community. Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen, offered congratulations and praised Winds for “living fearlessly”.
The win also holds a deeper significance, breaking barriers and setting a record as the first Taiwanese winner of the renowned drag competition. Winds’ journey highlighted the increasing prominence of Taiwan’s drag scene and its advocacy for queer rights, with the country being the first in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage.
