The Listeners – New Drama with Rebecca Hall for BBC One
The BBC has announced a new drama series called The Listeners, based on the novel by Jordan Tannahill and starring Rebecca Hall. Produced by Element Pictures and directed by Janicza Bravo, the show follows Claire (Rebecca Hall), an English teacher who begins to hear a mysterious low humming sound that no one else can hear.
Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama, describes The Listeners as “a captivating story that has been brought to life in this gripping adaptation which interweaves a feeling of the unknown with the need for human connectivity.”
The series delves into Claire’s life as the unexplained noise disrupts her relationships with her husband and daughter. Despite seeking medical help, no source or cause can be found. However, when she discovers that one of her students, Kyle (played by Ollie West), can also hear the sound, they form an unlikely friendship. Together, they find solace among a group of neighbors led by Jo and Omar who claim to hear the same hum and view it as a special gift bestowed upon select individuals.
The Listeners explores themes of mystery, desire for transcendence, community-building in divisive times, and the allure of enigmatic experiences. It poses questions about conspiracy culture and emphasizes the universal human yearning for connection.
Rebecca Hall is joined by an impressive cast including Prasanna Puwanarajah, Amr Waked, Gayle Rankin, Mia Tharia, Franc Ashman, Samuel Edward Cook, Karen Henthorn, Lucy Sheen,and Ian Mercer. Filmed in Greater Manchester under the direction of Janicza Bravo and produced by Element Pictures in collaboration with Fremantle company., The Listeners promises to deliver thought-provoking storytelling.
