20/20 Running Out Of Time (ABC Friday March 31, 2023)

Today Friday March 31, 2023, there is a new episode of 20/20.

Running Out Of Time When University of Utah student and swimmer Lauren McCluskey met a bar bouncer, it seemed like the beginning of a happily ever after. Friends of Lauren’s became worried about his controlling behaviour and pushed her to end things with him.

Soon after, Lauren learned that her lover Melvin Rowland, a newly released 37-year-old sex offender, was not who he claimed to be. When he started extorting and harassing her, Lauren called campus police out of shock and fear and terminated the relationship.

Lauren was abducted on her way back to class after a week of her family and friends repeatedly asking campus police, local law enforcement, and school officials for assistance. In a new two-hour “20/20,” host David Muir is joined by ESPN journalists T.J. Quinn and Nicole Noren as they examine the institutional failures that may have contributed to Lauren’s murder.

Lauren’s parents, Jill and Matt McCluskey, the Utah attorney general Sean Reyes, a former campus police officer named Miguel Deras, the former Utah assistant attorney general who prosecuted Rowland for two sex crimes named Paul Amann, and Rowland’s parole agent named Megan Thomson all appear on this two-hour episode of “20/20.”

Courtney Tanner, the main reporter for the Salt Lake Tribune on the story, is interviewed, as are Todd Reed, the former news director at KTVX/ABC4 in Salt Lake City, Diamond Jackson, Lauren’s university housing adviser and friend, two of Lauren’s closest friends, and a woman who dated Rowland.
