Africa: Cape airs Wednesday 18 October 2023 on BBC Four.
What is this episode about
Two major ocean currents meet at the southern tip of Africa, making the region a veritable kaleidoscope of life and colour. The warm Agulhas current, which flows eastward, causes clouds to form and move inland, making this region the wettest in all of southern Africa. The cold Benguela current, which flows westward, is rich in great white sharks. Fog laden with moisture rolls inland, sustaining a beautiful desert garden. One of the most spectacular natural phenomena on Earth takes place at the point where these two currents collide: the sardine run in South Africa. The largest animal in Africa, the brydes whale, is among the many predators that have gathered here.
