Aldi’s Next Big Thing Series Premiere Thursday 20 October on Channel 4
Small-scale British food and drink producers have the opportunity to pitch their goods to Aldi, the country’s fourth-largest supermarket, in brand-new six-part series Aldi’s Next Big Thing. A significant supply deal with Aldi’s stores nationwide is the reward. That equals nearly 1000 outlets.
Each episode is focused on a particular grocery category and is hosted by Anita Rani and award-winning grocer Chris Bavin. Every novel product, from camel’s milk to dessert sushi to crisp-filled chocolate bars to Yorkshire pudding beer, must win over Julie Ashfield, managing director of buying at Aldi, who has invaluable knowledge of what makes a supermarket a top seller.
Before Julie must select her overall winner, two suppliers will be chosen to continue developing their products while also pitching them at Aldi’s West Midlands headquarters. The “dinner time” category is covered in the first episode. Six small-scale vendors present their products, including two young aspirants who believe insects are the future of food, a driven sauce maker who produces her product in a modest south London apartment, and a pie maker who has devoted his life to perfecting pies. At Aldi HQ, hopefuls give it their all in an effort to change their lives and businesses.
