Animal Park “Summer 2021 Episode 1” (BBC One Monday 27 March 2023)
Animal Park airs a new episode tonight Monday 27 March 2023 on BBC One.
“Summer 2021 Episode 1” Following the remarkable lives of the exotic animals and the dedicated keepers at Longleat Safari Park, Kate Humble and Ben Fogle are back at the park for another sun-drenched summer season.
Keepers and veterinarians must work together quickly to treat Jumba the lion’s tail infection. In 1966, when the park opened, veterinarian knowledge of lions was limited; since then, the staff has made significant contributions to the global understanding of exotic species. Rich, the park’s veterinarian, has never had to amputate an animal’s tail before, but when he does so for Jumba, it’s just the latest in a long line of exceptional measures taken for the animals’ sake.
Kate is amazed by the large herd of eland, and she investigates why there are so many newborns. Ben has the rare chance to watch a group of bachelor gorillas in their natural habitat. They spend most of their time searching for food in the wild, therefore their keepers have devised a strategy to mimic this activity using broom heads and chopped vegetables. Jean Johansson finds out how parrots react to the heat of scorching chilies they could meet in the wild and helps cool down South American tapirs, who would ordinarily stay cool under a rainforest canopy.
Hamza Yassin, a wildlife photographer, has recently joined the Animal Park family and is using his specialised zoom lenses to study the fascinating species there. He’s hanging out with the macaque monkeys today. Will he be able to single out the group’s leader and explain the current pecking order to the keepers?
