Back In Time For The Corner Shop “1950’s – 1960’s“ (ABC TV Tuesday 21 March 2023)
Back In Time For The Corner Shop airs a new episode tonight Tuesday 21 March 2023 on ABC TV.
“1950’s – 1960’s“ Carol Ferrone is overjoyed to finally get her hands on the family car, but her newfound independence poses a threat to the neighbourhood corner store. Customers can now stock their cars (and fancy new refrigerators) to capacity with items from the supermarket.
Although the Ferrones’ store now sells sliced bread and other mass-produced items, they recognise the need to diversify in order to retain consumers. As an alternative to “one-stop-shop” supermarkets, trendy boutiques provide continental deli meats, candies, milkshakes, and flowers to entice customers to step foot inside. Around this time, Australia abandons the pound and the Ferrones have to deal with decimalization of their country’s currency.
Teenagers in the 1960s, a time of profound cultural and social shifts, begin to create an identity separate from their parents’. Indigenous Affairs Minister Linda Burney stops by the Ferrones’ shop to discuss the consequences of the 1967 Referendum.
