The simple corner store run by the Ferrone family in the 1970’s is more like to the modern day mixed business convenience store, complete with long hours and stiff competition.

There has never been a more active time in history for activism, with young people and women leading the charge for freedom and equality. Cleo magazine is at the vanguard of advocating gender equality with its racy male centrefolds and rule-breaking female trends, while newspapers carry the news three times a day. Ita Buttrose, a former editor at Cleo, describes the magazine’s efforts to subvert convention in this episode.

The decline in cigarette advertising and smoking has shifted national focus to health, yet the increase in processed foods has contributed to an increase in obesity.

Pam Burridge, a pioneer in the sport of surfing for women, encourages Sienna to ride waves with confidence.

Tim Shaw, a TV salesman with Demtel, advises the Ferrones on how to increase their sales in the face of competition from grocery stores.

And Socceroo Craig Foster enlightens the Ferrones on the history of Australia’s love of the sport that catapulted us onto the international stage.
