Grand Designs: 1940’s Prefab (Channel 4 Wed 7 September 2022)
Kevin meets Rob and Kate, who have spent eight years residing in a prefab house constructed in the 1940s by Rob’s grandfather. This factory-built home is far past its prime because it was only intended to be occupied for ten years.
Finally, Kate and Rob will be able to replace it with a custom-built, warm home that will also be constructed using volumetric modular technology in a factory. Their new home will be built on a production line in just six weeks, complete with insulation, tiling, and kitchen installation. After that, six enormous modules will be brought to the location and craned into place to quickly and easily build a fascinating three-bedroom home.
Well, that’s the theory! Despite major access issues meaning that their new house might not even be delivered, Rob and Kate forge ahead and demolish their old prefab. Now that there’s no turning back, problems have to be solved, and trust in their modular contractor has to be 100%.
On the face of it, Kate and Rob have embraced a reliable, efficient and cheap way of building a house, a method that could revolutionise the way we all build homes in the future. But one big question remains: will the end result really feel like the characterful home they’ve dreamt of, or just some kind of glorified static caravan?
