Ice Age: A Frozen World Episode 1 (Channel 5 Tuesday 3 January 2023)
Today Tuesday 3 January 2023, there is a new episode of Ice Age: A Frozen World.
Episode 1 Witnessing the emergence of megafauna like the woolly mammoth and saber-toothed cat, Steve Backshall and Michaela Strachan experience the Ice Age like never before. These Ice Age giants are brought back to life through the use of CGI.
We discuss the factors that contributed to the extinction of these formidable creatures and explain how they were able to survive in such a harsh environment. Michaela is in Svalbard, a remote Arctic island, trying to figure out what caused the Ice Age.
Steve, meantime, is in the United Kingdom learning what kinds of Ice Age mega-beasts lived there. Steve is shown the skeletons of a mammoth, an arctic fox, and a huge Ice Age hyena by Professor Danielle Schreve. However, Danielle has made an even more significant discovery, and she is only now ready to let the cameras in on the action!
Almost a dozen extinct Ice Age animals were all discovered in the same tiny cave by her and her colleagues near Plymouth. What might have been the cause of death for these giants?
Was it a natural tragedy that took them all, or did one top predator wipe them out? Steve must investigate a murder case that occurred during the Ice Age. Michaela learns what made the saber-toothed cat the most feared predator of the Ice Age.
Yet when she studies the massive teeth and skull of this beast, she realises it was vulnerable in one crucial area. It’s possible that this is what finally put an end to the species. Steve examines the DNA of the mammoth in Sweden to learn more about the creature.
Facilitated by the world-renowned geneticist, Professor Love Dalén The Ice Age superpower that Steve investigates why it disappeared.
It appears, however, that mammoths may not be gone for good: Steve finds a novel method of manipulating genes that may be able to bring people back from the dead.
