Remarkable Places to Eat

Remarkable Places to Eat: South Wales airs Monday 11 September on More4.

What is this episode about

Fred and restaurateur Thomasina Miers try some delicious dishes from south Wales in this episode. Thomasina has spent most of her life in Mexico, but she has fond memories of eating with her grandmother in south Wales. Tommi considers south Wales to have one of the most exciting food scenes in the United Kingdom, with incredible produce that can compete with the best of Europe.

The first stop is at The Beach House, a restaurant with a Michelin star and a slew of awards won by acclaimed Welsh chef Howyl Griffiths thanks to his commitment to using only the freshest, locally sourced ingredients. Tommi then takes Fred to Cardiff, which, if you know where to look, is a veritable paradise for foodies.

Asador 44 can be found in the heart of the capital, just behind the Principality Stadium. The restaurant is the brainchild of Tom, Natalie, and Owen Morgan and is modelled after the grill houses of northern Spain, where delicious meats and seasonal vegetables are cooked over an open flame.

Tommi takes Fred to Monmouthshire; this county on the English border has been a culinary leader in Wales for the past two decades and is home to one of the largest food and drink festivals in the United Kingdom. The Black Bear Inn, run by Josh and Hannah Byrne, is one of her favourite bars in the country near the town of Usk.

Only three appetisers, three entrées, and three desserts (plus a few bar snacks) are available on the seasonal and locally sourced menu. As they reflect on their trip at the legendary Raglan Castle, Fred realises that south Wales and the incredible places he has visited have completely knocked him for a loop.

Fred Sirieix embarks on a gastronomic adventure as renowned chefs and eatery experts share the contents of their “little black books” with him.
