Songs of Praise: The Church on Parliament Square (BBC One Sunday 28 May 2023)
Songs of Praise: The Church on Parliament Square airs Sunday 28 May 2023 on BBC One.
Sean Fletcher goes to Westminster’s St. Margaret’s Church, well-known as a place of worship for members of Parliament and the House of Lords. Sean investigates the significance of religion in the lives of politicians, both in the ordinary course of business and at pivotal moments in parliament’s history, such as Victory in Europe Day in 1945, when Winston Churchill led members of parliament from the House of Commons to St. Margaret’s for a special thanksgiving service to celebrate the end of the war. Meeting the chaplain to the speaker of the House of Commons gives Sean an insider’s look at the House of Commons and its daily ritual of opening prayers.
Pam Rhodes talks with Christians in Politics members, a group that works to unite Christians of all political persuasions for the sake of prayer and camaraderie. Pam also speaks with Nadim and Tanya Ednan-Laperouse, a couple whose faith helped them fight for legislative reform following their daughter’s untimely death. In honour of Pentecost Sunday and the Gospel Singer of the Year award, Patrice Campbell will perform a new and old hymn from churches all over the United Kingdom that invokes the Holy Spirit.
