The Repair Shop: Episode 40 (Friday 18 November 2022 BBC One)
Today Friday 18 November 2022 the show The Repair Shop airs an episode called Episode 40 on BBC One
Steve Kember, the master of music boxes, is in charge of the first restoration of the day. Marie Ayears appears, carrying a musical Grenadier Guard doll. Marie’s father served with the Grenadier Guards in the 1950s and was present at Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in 1953. Marie’s proud grandmother purchased the music box to commemorate the occasion. It’s supposed to play Auld Lang Syne, but Marie fears she overwound him, and the mechanism is now jammed. Toy restorers Julie Tatchell and Amanda Middleditch must try to get Steve’s tired-looking unform ready for inspection while he works on repairing the music box.
Alice Ellingham and her mother June arrive at the barn next. They’ve brought in a sextant, which June’s late husband Bob used for navigation at sea. Bob joined the Merchant Navy at the age of 16 and retired as a cruise ship captain. The sextant accompanied him throughout his career and would have been an essential navigational tool prior to GPS. Alice and June are both extremely proud of Bob’s career and hope that Steve Fletcher can restore the instrument to its original condition so that they can learn to use it to connect with Bob’s past.
Rohan Gunatillake from Glasgow is the day’s final visitor. He is the keeper of an unusual-looking chest that came from his grandmother’s home in Sri Lanka and now serves as a reminder of Rohan’s Sri Lankan heritage. Rohan’s grandmother grew up on a farm in rural Sri Lanka, surrounded by rubber trees, paddy fields, and water buffalo. Summer visits to see her were like visiting another world for Rohan, and they left an indelible impression. Sections of the chest have broken off over time, posing a significant challenge for furniture restorer Will Kirk. The chest is also missing a brass handle, which will be cast by silversmith Brenton West.
