What is this episode about

Lucia Scalisi, a conservator, finds a peculiar religious relic to be utterly enthralling. It’s a sculpture representing the Hindu trinity of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva. When viewed from different perspectives, the portrait reveals each goddess. Over a century ago, Raj’s grandfather crafted it for his Hindu daughter, Raj’s mother. Raj’s mother’s portrait sits in the home shrine where she would say her prayers each day, and it is a constant reminder of how much he misses her. Years of dust and spider webs have settled into the boxed frame, obscuring the sacred images inside. As she carefully restores this priceless heirloom, Lucia marvels at the portrait’s ingenious design.

Aisling follows, carrying a silver locket that she received as a gift from her departed grandparents but has since broken. She wears the locket almost constantly because of the comfort it brings her. When the front of the decorative casing came loose and disappeared, she was devastated. She wishes she could wear it again, but this time with new photos of her beloved grandparents in place of the old ones. The locket’s front casing and hinge are destroyed, so goldsmith Richard Talman commissions skilled engraver Sam Marsden to make new ones.

Expert optician Richard Biggs can’t wait to start restoring some old binoculars. Erica’s dad gave them to her and she and her mum used to go birdwatching in rural Devon with them. These battered and dirty binoculars are a reminder of exciting adventures and a caring father from a child’s past. Erica’s fascination with birds began with the thrill of seeing her first kingfisher on the Teign Estuary, and it has never subsided. It is her fondest hope to someday share them with her own grandchildren. Richard faces difficulty removing the prisms but is steadfast in his goal to return them to her in perfect condition.
