Tiny Oz: Broome (S1EP2 ABC TV Tues 26 April 2022)
Broome: Hosts Jimmy Rees and JoAnne Bouzianis-Sellick take a ride back in time and space, to the remote north-western town of Broome in the early 1900s, during the heyday of the pearling era.
Jimmy Rees and JoAnne Bouzianis-Sellick, our hosts, transport us to Broome in the early 1900s, during the zenith of the pearling boom.
Lachlan Fraser is a Broome-based artist, carpenter, and skilled miniature model maker. He’s been at this far northern region of Western Australia for 40 years, born to Scottish parents. He supervises a team of local artisans in the construction of the old town’s main streets.
The model will portray the town’s rich history, Indigenous heritage, Pearling industry, and multicultural culture. Jimmy and JoAnne learn about Broome’s history while visiting Aboriginal elders, Malays, and Japanese whose stories influenced the model.
Lachlan has spent six months creating a completely hand-hewn picture of Broome, complete with buildings, luggers, trams, camels, and a thriving pearling workforce, and he is ready to show the model to the people of Broome at a black tie and thongs event.
We see Broome in a whole new light as we celebrate local artists, regional history, and community bonds.
