BBC One Annouces “Return to Paradise”, A Death In Paradise Spin-Off
The popular UK drama Death in Paradise will have a sequel set in Australia on BBC One called Return to Paradise. The six-part series will be filmed by BBC Studios Productions Australia and Red Planet Pictures for ABC Australia and the BBC in 2024.
The stunning Australian coastline serves as a backdrop to the six murder mysteries in Return to Paradise, all of which take place in the picturesque seaside town of Dolphin Cove.
Mackenzie Clarke, an Australian ex-pat now living in London, is often regarded as the Met’s “golden girl” due to her record for solving seemingly intractable crimes through her intuitive approach. Nonetheless, she is unexpectedly sent back to Dolphin Cove, her childhood home and a magnificent seaside paradise that is also Mackenzie’s worst fear.
Mack has been gone from her hometown for the past six years, and she has made it clear that she has no intention of ever returning. She still has no love for Dolphin Cove, and the locals have no love for her. Everyone, including Mackenzie, would rather her not be there.
After a murder occurs at Dolphin Cove, Mack feels compelled to use her detective prowess and decides that she must make the most of the situation despite her misgivings. This includes making amends with the guy she abandoned at the altar six years prior.
Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition, says: “Everything we all love about Death in Paradise – the humour, the beautiful scenery, the likeable characters, the ingenious plots – now in a fabulous Australian setting. I cannot wait for BBC viewers to be introduced to Detective Mack and the good (and not so good!) folk of Dolphin Cove. What a treat we have in store!”
Return to Paradise will star Elizabeth Coleman, Alexandra Collier, and Kodie Bedford, and was created by Peter Mattessi, James Hall, and Robert Thorogood.
Beyond Paradise, the Death in Paradise spin-off that took place in the United Kingdom and premiered on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in February 2023, quickly became the most watched new drama in the United Kingdom this year.
Both BBC One and BBC iPlayer will carry Return to Paradise. Kylie Washington and Warren Clarke of BBC Studios Productions Australia, Belinda Campbell and Tim Key of Red Planet Pictures, and Rachel Okine and Brett Sleigh of ABC serve as executive producers for the six-episode series. Studios Productions Australia and Red Planet Pictures produce the six-episode series for the ABC and the BBC. BBC Studios will handle international distribution of the show.
