BBC’s “Coronation Concert” Line-Up Revealed
For the first time ever, Ncuti Gatwa and Mei Mac will be featured in a joint production by the Royal Ballet, the Royal Opera, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal College of Music, and the Royal College of Art as part of the Coronation Concert. The piece, which will feature music, dance, art, and theatre, will be inspired by the concepts of love and community.
The show’s centrepiece is a performance by the Royal Shakespeare Company of scenes from one of Shakespeare’s plays; it stars Ncuti Gatwa, who earned an Ian Charleson Commendation for his performance as Mercutio in Romeo and Juliet at Home Theatre Manchester, and Mei Mac, who was nominated for an Olivier Award for her role in My Neighbour Totoro.
With music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, the Royal Opera Chorus will perform a beautiful arrangement of a classic song from West Side Story. Francesca Hayward and Marcelino Sambé, both principal dancers with The Royal Ballet, will also perform an original choreography created especially for the event.
The Royal College of Art’s students will have their artworks projected onto Windsor Castle and the stage. Katherine Yoon and Betania Johnny on violin, Declan Wicks on viola, and Marion Portelance on cello, playing a cello once owned and played by His Majesty, now in the collection of The Royal College of Music, will perform as soloists alongside the other performers.
For two years, Ncuti appeared at the Globe Theatre with Emma Rice at the helm and Kneehigh Theatre as producer. Hecuba, And Then There Were None, and Victoria were just a few of the six plays in which Ncuti appeared during his time at Dundee Rep Theatre.
Hugh Bonneville, star of such shows as “Downton Abbey,” “The Gold,” “Twenty Twelve,” “W1A,” “Notting Hill,” and “the Paddington films,” will serve as the evening’s host host. Hugh will set the mood for the evening’s entertainment by describing the venue and introducing the performers before they take the stage.
He says: “I’m delighted to be taking part in this unique event, celebrating the best of musical entertainment in honour of His Majesty’s coronation. In true British style, come rain or shine it will be a night to remember.”
It will take place in the grounds of Windsor Castle on 7 May, celebrating the Coronation of Their Majesties The King and The Queen in front of 20,000 members of the public and invited guests and will be broadcast to the nation on BBC One and BBC iPlayer, as well as BBC Radio 2 and BBC Sounds.
