BBC Two is set to air a brand new episode of Great British Railway Journeys on Thursday, March 28, 2024 at 6:30 PM. In this episode titled “Edinburgh to Queensferry,” Michael Portillo embarks on a journey through Scotland’s capital city and its surrounding areas.
One of the highlights of this episode takes place in Newtongrange, a former Midlothian mining village. Here, Michael meets Mick McGahey, the son of a prominent miner who played a significant role in the labor disputes during the 1970s and 1980s. As vice-president of the National Union of Mineworkers, ‘Red’ Mick McGahey left an indelible mark on the history of Scottish mining.
Alongside his visit to Newtongrange, Michael ventures to South Gyle, an Edinburgh neighborhood known for its recording studios. There he is transported back in time to the wild world of 1970s pop as he engages with Stuart ‘Woody’ Wood, guitarist for the famous Bay City Rollers. This iconic teenage boyband dominated the charts during that era.
