Gareth Malone’s Easter Passion Episode 2, 31 March 2024, BBC One
In the second episode of this three-part series, Gareth Malone and his singers have three weeks left to prepare for their performance of J.S. Bach’s St. John Passion. The episode opens with a focus on Jake, a partially sighted singer supported by a large-print tablet and music stand, as he struggles to follow the intricate score. The pressure increases for Evan, Rhiannon and Samar, who are offered solo parts, while Gareth faces the challenge of conducting an orchestra for the first time.
As the rehearsals intensify, Gareth arranges for the singers to attend a contemporary passion play, depicting the harrowing arrest, trial and crucifixion of Jesus. The performance strikes a chord with the singers, bringing the story behind Bach’s masterpiece to life.
In the final days before the big event, the singers embark on a shopping trip to Cardiff, seeking appropriate concert attire. They are joined by the BBC Singers and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, and finally, world-renowned soloists Julia Doyle, Nicholas Mulroy, and Roderick Williams—who sang at the coronation of King Charles—add the finishing touches to the performance.
Tune in to BBC One on Easter Sunday, 31 March 2024 at 11.30am to witness the fruits of Gareth’s labour.
