ITVX Comedy Drama “The Effects of Lying” Premieres 6 July
The Effects of Lying, an independent production from Bonaparte Films, has been picked up by ITVX and will premiere on July 6. A heartfelt comedy drama from director Isher Sahota (Grace, McDonald & Dodds) and producer Jon Tarcy (Life in Black) that offers a welcome glimpse of South Asia on the big screen.
The Effects of Lying is delightfully chaotic as it follows Naveen (Ace Bhatti), a devoted husband and loving father whose life unravels over the course of one day as a result of a series of shocking events. Naveen is confronted with some uncomfortable realities after decades of ignoring them.
Starring Navin Chowdhry (Our Girl), Shaheen Khan (Bend It Like Beckham), and Mark Williams (Harry Potter), with supporting roles from Ace Bhatti (Bohemian Rhapsody, Line of Duty), Laila Rouass (Holby City, Spooks), and Lauren Patel (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie), among others. The script is from James Hey (Doctors).
Naveen (Bhatti) is a model family man who has always done what he was told. He’s always put his family first, but today is different. After discovering his secretly binge-eating daughter Simran (Patel) and his dissatisfied wife Sangeeta (Rouass) in bed with his brother (Chowdry), the truth comes tumbling out.
Now is the time for Naveen to examine the foundational connections he uses to define himself. And if he isn’t any of those things, then what is he? He has been passive for far too long, allowing himself to be swept along by the whims and desires of those around him. He needs to realize that he’s the one in charge of his own fate and happiness.
Quotes from Ace Bhatti and Laila Rouass
Ace Bhatti says, “Naveen is a man who tries to do right by his family. He’s trying so hard to keep his fractious family together, but within 24 hours he learns three very deep, very dark secrets that break his life apart. By lunchtime, his whole life is shattered…and he has to learn very quickly how to deal with that on an emotional level.”
Laila Rouass says of Sangeeta, “Sangeeta finds herself trapped and disappointed that her life has taken the route it has. We find her at a real crossroads and I think a lot of women can relate to someone like her – a reflection of the opportunities you didn’t take. This film meant a lot to us and the opportunity to do something where everyone’s united in the reason they’re doing it. For me, that’s where the magic lies in this movie.”
