Lost Temples of Cambodia Series Premiere on Channel 4 Sat 17 February
In the first episode of the brand new series “Lost Temples of Cambodia,” British archaeologist Pauline Carroll embarks on a journey through Cambodia, a country steeped in the history of the ancient Khmer Empire. Narrated by Dame Prue Leith, this series follows Pauline as she explores renowned temple sites such as Angkor Wat, the Bayon, and Ta Prohm.
Pauline’s expedition takes her across Cambodia, where she meets with experts and delves into ongoing archaeological work. Through these endeavours, our understanding of life within one of the world’s greatest ancient civilisations begins to take shape. This insightful work sheds light on how the empire eventually succumbed to decline after centuries of unprecedented success.
One fascinating aspect that Pauline uncovers is the story of Jayavarman VII, considered one of history’s greatest kings. She traces his efforts to create what would become known as the world’s first free national health service.
The premiere episode focuses on Angkor, which served as both the capital city and home to the colossal Angkor Wat temple. As Pauline ventures through its vast grounds and intricate carvings, she unveils glimpses into daily life meticulously preserved within its stone galleries.
Beyond Angkor lies Mahendraparvarta, a former capital hidden deep in Cambodia’s remote jungle. Pauline treks to this obscure location to unearth more about this grand empire’s roots.
