Mary Beard Remembers… Civilisation, 21 April 2024, BBC Four
In “Mary Beard Remembers…“, the classicist and broadcaster reflects on Kenneth Clark’s landmark 1969 series “Civilisation“, which offered a personal view of Western cultural history. Beard, who was just 14 years old when the series aired, recalls how it broadened her perspective and sparked her interest in ancient art and culture.
Beard, known for her engaging and accessible approach to classics, offers her unique perspective on Clark’s series. She discusses how it opened her mind to new places and ideas, but also points out aspects that she aims to correct in her own work. She addresses Clark’s focus on the “great male artist” and his Eurocentric stance, which she believes was already slightly outdated even in 1969.
Beard will likely draw connections to her own series “Civilisations”, which she co-presented with historians Simon Schama and David Olusoga. “Civilisations” expanded the scope of Clark’s original series, exploring a wider range of cultures and perspectives.
Kenneth Clark’s Civilisation begins a repeat run on BBC Four directly after this short ten minute piece airs.
Mary Beard Remembers… Civilisation airs on BBC Four at 9:00 pm on Sunday 21 April 2024.
