Paramount+ to Showcase Cyndi Lauper’s Legacy in ‘Let the Canary Sing’
Upcoming documentary explores the iconic singer’s cultural impact and advocacy.
Paramount+ has announced that the documentary “Let the Canary Sing,” exploring the life and career of Cyndi Lauper, will premiere on the streaming service on June 4 in the US and Canada, and June 5 in the UK, Australia, Latin America, and several European countries. Directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Alison Ellwood, the film made its debut at the 2023 Tribeca Festival.
Produced by Fine Point Films and Sony Music Entertainment, in association with Concord Originals, the feature-length documentary chronicles Lauper’s rise to stardom and her enduring influence on music, fashion, and social advocacy. Known for her distinctive style and powerful vocals, Lauper has left an indelible mark on popular culture, and the film promises to offer an engaging exploration of her life and work.
“Let the Canary Sing” includes interviews with Lauper herself, as well as a range of other participants, offering insights into her career and impact. The documentary is executive produced by Lisa Barbaris and Gregory P. Cimino II, with Tom Mackay, Richard Story, and Rebecca Teitel serving as executive producers for Sony Music Entertainment, and Sophia Dilley and Wesley Adams as executive producers for Concord Originals.
Lauper, known for her hits like “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” “True Colors,” and “I Drove All Night,” has always marched to the beat of her own drum, and her influence extends beyond music. Her unwavering feminism and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community have been hallmarks of her career, and the documentary will delve into these aspects of her life and legacy.
“Let the Canary Sing” will be accompanied by a career-spanning album of the same name, released by Legacy Recordings, featuring a collection of Lauper’s most memorable songs. The album will be available on vinyl and as a digital expanded edition.
