Popcornflix April 2024 Highlights: A Springtime Smorgasbord of FREE Streaming Treats
As the flowers bloom and the days grow longer, many will be seeking some indoor escapism amidst the beauty of the season. Look no further than Popcornflix, the streaming service that’s entirely free! With a vast array of content, there’s something for every taste. From classic movies to cult favourites, here’s a glimpse at some of the fantastic features on offer this April.
Kicking off the highlights is the Japanese kaiju masterpiece, Godzilla (1954). Directed by Ishiro Honda and co-written by Honda and Takeo Murata, this epic monster movie launched an entire franchise and embedded itself in popular culture. The film sees a prehistoric beast, awakened by nuclear testing, wreak havoc on Japan and its cities. With incredible practical effects and a powerful message about the dangers of nuclear weapons, it’s a must-watch for fans of the genre.
For those who favour true crime, the documentary After the Murder of Albert Lima (2019) might just tick the box. Following the killing of Albert Lima, whose murderer evades justice, his son Paul takes matters into his own hands. Hiring two bounty hunters, Paul ventures into Honduras on a perilous mission for closure. It’s a riveting, and at times darkly funny, exploration of one man’s quest for justice.
If a modern crime drama is more your cup of tea, look no further than Rampart (2011). Written by James Ellroy and directed by Oren Moverman, the film is set in the midst of the Rampart scandal that rocked the Los Angeles Police Department in the 1990s. Woody Harrelson delivers a searing performance as Officer Dave Brown, a corrupt cop whose career is in freefall after a video of him beating a suspect goes viral. With a stellar supporting cast including Ben Foster, Ice Cube, and Sigourney Weaver, this is a gripping story of a man past his sell-by date.
In the mood for a caper? American Animals (2018), directed by Bart Layton, blurs the lines between fiction and reality. The film recounts the true story of four young men who attempt the audacious theft of some rare books from Transylvania University in Kentucky. Interweaving interviews with the real-life perpetrators and fictionalised scenes, this unique thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat.
Also on the roster is some light-hearted adventure with the made-for-television fantasy,The Librarian: Quest for the Spear (2004). Noah Wyle stars as the titular librarian who must recover a magical spear to save the world from evil forces. With a strong supporting cast including Sonya Walger and Bob Newhart, this fun, family-friendly film is a great option for some undemanding viewing pleasure.
For those who enjoy their cinema a little harder-hitting, Puncture (2011) fits the bill. Based on a true story, the film follows young lawyer Mike Weiss (Chris Evans) as he attempts to take on a powerful healthcare corporation. Idealistic and addicted to drugs, Weiss stumbles upon a medical scandal that sees healthcare workers infected with diseases such as AIDS, due to the reuse of unsafe needles. Based on the true story of Michael David Weiss and Paul Danziger, it’s a gripping David vs. Goliath tale with a strong performance by Evans.
Also on the roster is the biopic Phantom Punch (2008), starring Ving Rhames as Sonny Liston, the controversial former world heavyweight boxing champion. The film charts Liston’s rise to fame and the controversies that surrounded him, including his run-ins with the law and alleged links to the mob.
These titles and many more can be accessed for free on Popcornflix from the beginning of April. With content added regularly, there’s always a reason to tune in and binge some of the best films around. Happy streaming!
