REBUILDING BLACK WALL STREET with Morris Chestnut Premieres on OWN September 29
Docuseries “Rebuilding Black Wall Street,” hosted by Morris Chestnut, will premiere on the Oprah Winfrey Network on September 29 at 9 p.m. Eastern Time (8 p.m. Central Time), tracing the century-long impact of the 1921 Tulsa Massacre and chronicling the resilient community rebuilding.
Black Wall Street
Tulsa’s Greenwood neighbourhood was home to many influential Black businesspeople, homeowners, and community members, earning it the nickname “Black Wall Street.” In what has been called the single most horrific incident of racial terrorism since slavery, a mob destroyed that district on May 31, 1921, and the following day. More than 1,200 homes were destroyed, and at least 60 businesses and community buildings were also lost.
In this one-of-a-kind, upbeat renovation docuseries, we follow the Greenwood District as it undergoes a rebuilding process, a journey of strength and joy. Many of the people featured are direct descendants of the original Black Wall Street residents, and Chestnut and the build teams, led by designers Jon Pierre and Mary Tjon-Joe-Pin (Two Steps Home), take viewers on a six-part journey through Greenwood’s rich history and the personal journeys of those featured. Viewers will feel the strain of large-scale construction on their bodies and share in the joy of Greenwood’s bright future as they watch the opening of new businesses and the completion of exciting new projects.
