2024 Dakar Rally Coverage on SBS

The prestigious Dakar Rally is set to make a highly anticipated return to Saudi Arabia for its fifth consecutive year, with exclusive coverage available on SBS and SBS On Demand. From January 6 to January 20, viewers can expect daily highlights of all the action from the event.

Australian Red Bull rider Toby Price will be competing in his 10th year at the Dakar Rally, aiming to bounce back from last year’s narrow defeat and add to his previous two wins. Defending 4 wheel champion Nasser Al-Attiyah and Australian driver Daniel Saunders will also be looking to make their mark on the challenging desert route.

Organized by the Amaury Sport Organisation, the Dakar Rally is known as the world’s biggest rally raid, featuring the best female and male motorcycle, car, quad bike, and truck drivers in the world. The rally, which kicks off the first round of the 2024 World Rally-Raid Championship, is a test of off-road endurance in tough terrain.

Covering 5,000 kilometers, the Dakar Rally route presents a myriad of challenges for competitors, including sand, rocks, gravel, and tarmac. With a prologue and 12 competitive stages, the 2024 route will see 778 drivers from around the world starting from Saudi Arabia’s Al-Ula and finishing in Yanbu on the shores of the Red Sea.

This year’s rally will introduce new stages, including a 48-hour marathon that is expected to be particularly challenging for participants. SBS Director of Sport Ken Shipp expressed the network’s excitement and pride in supporting the event, highlighting Australia’s talent in motorsports and their participation in the championship.

The 2024 Dakar Rally is set to begin on January 5 and conclude on January 19, with daily highlights airing on SBS from January 6 at 5.00pm to 6.00pm AEDT and available on SBS On Demand the same day. Viewers can also catch the event on SBS On Demand.
