Ian McLeod, a local crofter on the isolated island of Benbecula in the Outer Hebrides, discovers a strange torpedo there (Bryden Murdoch). A naval team from a nearby rocket range, led by security guard Nicolson (Robert Hardy), arrives to deal with the threat, but their efforts to neutralize it lead to a startling discovery.
The “torpedo” comes with a full DIY spy kit with an international feel, including an East German pair of binoculars, British and Swedish currency, a Finnish passport, and US service pattern revolvers.
A government security officer named Grant (Francis Matthews) joins Nicolson in the investigation.
He comes to a sticky end, leaving Nicolson with a lot of unanswered questions: What is Doctor Glenville (Michael Barrington), doing in the islands? Who murdered Grant, and why?
There was also a BBC Radio broadcast on Radio 4 in the lat 1960’s.
