Winning Widows (ITV Sitcom, Peggy Mount, Avice Landon)

Peggy Mount followed up her huge success in The Larkins with another sitcom (also for ATV and produced by Alan Tarrant). This time in Winning Widows she played a very similar character only Martha was a widow. The plot saw her and sister Mildred (Avice Landon), also a widow, sharing a house together to try and save on costs.

Over the course of two seasons Martha spent much of her time shouting and ranting at her sister, in typical Peggy Mount style really. Guest stars included the likes of Bernard Cribbins, Joe Melia, Ronnie Stevens, Graham Stark, Thorley Walters, Davy Kaye and Hugh Paddick. The series was written by Morecambe and Wise scribes Dick Hills and Sid Green.

The TV Times covered the show for it’s premiere episode and Peggy Mount was at pains to make plain that Martha was nothing like Ma Larkin (even though she was of course but Peggy was basically playing an exaggerated version of herself).
