Sitcom In Sickness And In Health was a sequel to the iconic Til Death Us Do Part, catching up with Alf Garnett and Else as pensioners. After Else’s death Alf had to struggle on alone adjusting to life as a widower. He spends much of his time venting his anger and frustration on the people around him, in particular on his neighbour upstairs, Mrs Hollingberry (Carmel McSharry).
Later on in the show’s run Alf and Mrs Hollingbery were to wed but she jilted him at the altar.
Sadly Dandy Nichols died on 6 February 1986 and only appeared in the first season.
As in Til Death, much of the humour comes from Alf’s strongly-voiced and bigoted opinions about virtually everything under the sun but now Alf is seriously out of step with the times as the world changes around him. His home help Winston for example is black AND gay.
