THE STATE OF THE NAVY. Norah O’Donnell visits the USS Nimitz, a United States Navy aircraft carrier stationed south of Taiwan and China in the Western Pacific, at a time when relations between the United States and China remain tense. O’Donnell, who was granted unusual access to the ship and its officers during a deployment, reports on the condition of the Navy in light of Chinese threats to invade Taiwan, a key American ally. While at sea, O’Donnell contacts Admiral Samuel Paparo, the head of the United States Pacific Fleet, and Admiral Mike Gilday, the chief of naval operations. The report includes an open discussion of U.S. Taiwan contingency planning and the effort to keep up with China’s rapid and remarkable naval and military buildup. This is a double-length segment. Keith Sharman and Roxanne Feitel are the producers.
“ONLY IN AMERICA.” Sharyn Alfonsi follows the life of Rocco Commisso, a business mogul and cable-TV magnate who rose from humble beginnings as a young immigrant in the Bronx to controversially own a professional soccer team in Florence, Italy. Alfonsi has a conversation with Commisso, a native American whose street savvy and no-nonsense approach have made him a celebrity in his home country. Guy Campanile is the producer.
