What is this episode about
The BBC is conducting a nationwide search for the best up-and-coming stand-up comedians as part of their annual New Comedy Awards competition. Five hopeful comics from Ballymena, County Antrim, Northern Ireland, will compete for a spot in the final showdown in Glasgow, Scotland, where one will be named the BBC New Comedian of 2023.
Performer of multiple-award-winning stand-up routines For tonight, we have Shane Todd as our host. Innovative Irish comedian Martin Angolo and Derry Girls’ Diona Doherty also joined him at the New Comedy Awards. In addition, Chief Judge Josh Pugh is present to maintain order. Richie Bree, Mustafa Saed, Ruth Hunter, Hester Ectomy, and Shane Clifford will all perform sets full of original material and jokes, making it difficult for the judges to choose a winner.
This is just one of six preliminary rounds happening all over the United Kingdom. Other locations include Bethnal Green, Leith, Nottingham, Bangor, and Sunderland.
From Peter Kay and Joe Lycett to Julian Barratt and Josie Long to Shappi Khorsandi and Romesh Ranganathan to Alan Carr and Russell Howard and Lee Ridley and Tom Allen and Lauren Pattison and Sarah Millican, the careers of some of Britain’s most beloved comedians have been launched and nurtured by these prestigious awards since their inception in 1995.
