What can we expect from this episode
Orkney is seven miles from the Scottish mainland and separated from the mainland by the turbulent Pentland Firth, Europe’s fastest-moving tidal race. The prehistoric map of Britain has been turned on its head by recent discoveries. New evidence suggests an outlandish theory: that the Orkney Islands were once the cultural centre of the ancient world and the birthplace of the stone circle cult that eventually led to the construction of Stonehenge.
The three-part series follows Neil Oliver, Chris Packham, Andy Torbet, and Dr. Shini Somara as they join hundreds of archaeologists from around the world at one of Europe’s largest digs.
Chris Packham decodes the DNA of the rare Orcadian vole, The story of Orkney’s unusual geology is unlocked as archaeologist Neil Oliver investigates the island’s tombs and monuments, as Dr. Shini Somara conducts experiments to determine how the Orcadians could have moved giant blocks of stone over rough ground, and as archaeological adventurer Andy Torbet climbs Orkney’s most challenging sea-stack.
