Dr. Phil Today Tuesday May 23, 2023, on CBS. Every year, over 23,000 foster youth in the United States reach legal majority and leave the system. Research shows that children who grow up in foster care are less likely to be happy as adults, and are more likely to be depressed, have low self-esteem, unhappy marriages, and live in isolation.
Hear the stories of two women who went through the foster care system and then left it as adults. Lisa claims she was separated from her siblings at a young age, was abused, went homeless, started college but dropped out, and only found success after enlisting in the military. She claims she hasn’t spoken to or seen some of her siblings in years, but she’s in for the shock of her life today.
Foster care was difficult for Ne’a, she says. She claims that since turning 18, she has learned about the extended foster care program and is actively working toward a bright future thanks to its support. Both agree that improvements must be made to the current foster care system. CASA’s chief executive officer, Charity Chandler-Cole, and Bishop Ed Smith talk about their efforts to effect positive change.
Airdate: Tuesday May 23, 2023 at 3.00pm on CBS.
Dr. Phil McGraw tells compelling stories about real people dealing with a wide range of emotional and behavioural issues, removing the shame and embarrassment that prevents people from seeking help.
