Drill on Trial: airs Sunday 2 July 2023 on BBC 3.
What can we expect from this episode
Tiffany Calver, a DJ on Radio 1Xtra, investigates the government’s reaction to UK drill, a rap style that has gained popularity but is also being blamed for an increase in violent crime.
Having witnessed the genre’s meteoric rise from underground beginnings to global chart dominance, Tiffany is also familiar with the scrutiny that has been directed at artists by the police and the legal system.
Every song Chinx (OS), a drill artist, has put out has put his freedom in jeopardy due to the increased police presence, stricter criminal orders, digital surveillance, and harsher sentences for artists.
If he is successful, he may be able to put his troubled past behind him. However, this achievement has become the focal point of a debate over free speech and crime prevention in the public sphere and the legal system.
Tiffany is determined to find a solution to a problem that has long plagued black music genres in the UK, despite police efforts to curb the rise in gang violence and artists’ criticisms of the lack of clarity around their policing.
