What can we expect from this episode
As long as there has been a National Health Service, members of the Edwards family have been a part of it.
Bea’s grandmother came to the UK as a health worker during the Windrush era. Gerrie, her daughter, is a matron at the Nottinghamshire National Health Service (NHS) and has been for the past 36 years. Her husband, Calvin, retrained as a mental health nurse when he was 49, and all three of their daughters also work for the NHS. There are three sisters named Rhishana, Brianna, and Samara. Rhishana is the oldest and works as a senior assistant in recruitment, while Brianna is a paediatric critical care nurse.
Bill Bailey has chosen Adebanji Alade, the President of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters who was born in London but raised in Nigeria, to paint a portrait of the family. Adebanji is no stranger to creating epic works of art, but this time he is pushed to his limits as he attempts to capture The Edwards’ enduring commitment to caring for people, which is almost as old as the NHS.
Where skills meet stories. Artists create breathtaking portraits of people with incredible personal and powerful stories – creating a picture of modern Britain.
