Foreign Correspondent This Week (ABC TV Thursday 13 April 2023)
This week on Foreign Correspondent, we learn about Bahrain and its efforts to become a liberal oasis in the Persian Gulf.
Thousands of young Saudis travel to Manama, the capital of Bahrain, every weekend in search of nightlife. Things that would be strictly illegal just across the “Johnny Walker” bridge are perfectly acceptable in this area.
This week on Foreign Correspondent, we’ll visit a hidden gem in the Middle East. The tiny Persian Gulf kingdom of Bahrain is trying to market itself to the rest of the world as a liberal haven in an otherwise conservative region.
Bahrain is undergoing a period of reinvention as its once abundant oil reserves start to dwindle and the country looks for methods to diversify its economy. Nightclubs and the garages of the ultra-rich are only two examples of the “modern” side of Bahrain that is contrasted with the efforts of others to maintain the country’s traditional culture.
