Great Southern Landscapes Season Final (ABC TV Tues 13 September 2022)
In the final instalment of Great Southern Landscapes, art enthusiast Rachel Griffiths travels to Western Arrernte country and central Australia to locate the exact location where Albert Namatjira created his 1954 masterpiece Rutjipma – Mount Sonder.
The original watercolour hanging in the Art Gallery of South Australia is Rachel’s first stop in Adelaide.
When Rachel arrives in Central Australia’s Ntaria (Hermannsburg), she meets Betty, Namatjira’s granddaughter, at Albert’s original home.
Aileron Roadhouse owner Greg Dick, who is a surprising collector and lives 130 kilometres north of Alice Springs, is the next person Rachel meets. More than 300 original Namatjira paintings that Greg owns fill the walls of his eccentric gallery.
The Iltja Ntjarra Art Centre in Mparntwe (Alice Springs), where local artists paint in the watercolour tradition, carries on Namatjira’s legacy today.
The Parrtjima Festival, which showcases an explosion of contemporary Indigenous art through the use of light and sound, is Rachel’s next stop as evening falls.
Rachel arrives at Rutjipma – Mount Sonder as the sun is setting behind the mountains, considers how far she has come, and acts on the advice given to her along the way to sit, listen, and enjoy.
Airdate: Tuesday 13 September 2022 at 8.00pm on ABC TV.
