What is this episode about

In the first half of the twentieth century, composers Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst were close friends and their music is credited with creating what is now known as the “English sound.” Historian Amanda Vickery and broadcaster Tom Service uncover the fascinating story of their friendship.

They follow in the footsteps of the two composers as they traverse the country on foot, listening for the ‘Englishness’ that we now recognise in their music that was inspired by Renaissance masters and folk music alike. The story is brought to life by performances of selections from both composers by the BBC Concert Orchestra.
